A PHOTOGRAPHIC BOOK PROPOSAL
“Research shows really clearly that we need nature in our surroundings. We need trees in our streets, plants in our gardens and flowers on our balcony. We need nature as our neighbor all the time.”
Dr Cecil Konijnendijk, Professor of Urban Forestry at the University of British Colombia (UBC).
Gardens, plants & flowers are not what you really think about when you think of NYC. In spite of this I have always photographed nature in the city in some way. When under lockdown from the Covid pandemic I felt a visceral need to seek out beauty in my environment (I live in Brooklyn). So, I began to photograph the plants and flowers to be found in the neighborhoods and parks of New York City in a more concentrated way. During this scavenger hunt for beauty, I began to see the plants and flowers as a reflection of the city itself. The following is a sample of these photographs. This book would not only highlight the beauty that can be found but also the need for nature in our daily, city dwelling lives.
